Environmental protection event in Tuen Mun promotes "Use less, waste less" lifestyle (with photos)
*********************************************************

To promote a "Use less, waste less" lifestyle, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) held a publicity event in Tuen Mun's Yan Oi Town Square today (January 25) to introduce various waste reduction and recycling activities in Tuen Mun and encourage members of the public to put green living into practice.

Speaking at the event's launch ceremony, the Permanent Secretary for the Environment/Director of Environmental Protection, Ms Anissa Wong, emphasised that Hong Kong is facing an imminent waste problem. She said she hoped that the activity today could enable Tuen Mun residents to understand more about recycling programmes and facilities in the district and mobilise the whole community to participate in waste reduction by promoting the "Use less, waste less" message.

Other officiating guests attending the ceremony included the Chairman of the Tuen Mun District Council, Mr Lau Wong-fat; the Vice-Chairman of Yan Oi Tong, Ms Clarea Au; and the District Officer (Tuen Mun), Mr David Lau.

During the event, the EPD launched a video titled "Recycling of Resources in Tuen Mun", which indicates the locations of various recycling collection points in the district. These recycling points will serve for the collection of glass, food, plastics, electrical appliances, computers, rechargeable batteries, clothes and fluorescent lamps. In addition, representatives from various organisations in the district were invited to share their experiences of waste reduction, while the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre performed a drama on environmental protection. Various environmental promotion features including games stalls, exhibition panels, workshops and upcycling and waste oil recycling displays and activities were set up by local organisations to enhance and strengthen public awareness.

As Chinese New Year is approaching, the EPD also took the opportunity to remind members of the public to participate in waste reduction and recycling while celebrating the festival.
