Romanian Chamber of Commerce opens in Hong Kong (with photo)
************************************************************

Commerce between Romania and Hong Kong is set to grow on the back of the opening today (December 17) of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce's office in Hong Kong.

The Chamber operates as a non-profit organisation in Hong Kong, and its primary objective is to provide a platform on which members can forge better relationships with the business community in Hong Kong and stay informed of developments in their fields of interest.

The Consul General of Romania in Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, Ms Talida Goean, congratulated the newly established Chamber and wished it every success. "In 2008, when the Consulate General of Romania reopened in Hong Kong, the number of Romanian citizens living in Hong Kong was around 70; after five years, that number has more than tripled to reach 230. Together with the growing presence of Romanian companies in Hong Kong, it is the right time for the Romanian business community in Hong Kong to organise itself under the framework of a local chamber of commerce, to further support our economic growth trend."

The Chairman of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce, Ms Valentina Tudose, said that Hong Kong offers Romanian businesses a strategic location from which to expand into Asia given its established role as Mainland China's economic gateway and its proximity to major Asian markets.

"The Romanian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong aims to become a dynamic force that will serve as a networking platform for the Romanian community and its interests in Hong Kong and, in particular, to create, advance and promote business between Romania and Hong Kong," Ms Tudose said.

According to the Consulate General of Romania, there are nearly 50 Romanian companies with a presence in Hong Kong, and Ms Tudose said that the Chamber hopes to see the number grow further in the next few years.

The Director-General of Investment Promotion, Simon Galpin, attended the opening ceremony of the Chamber's office. He said, "Since 2010, InvestHK has offered assistance to the Romanian Chamber to set up in Hong Kong. I am very happy to see the project completed and the opening of the chamber's office today. Hong Kong is an international business hub. I believe that the Romanian Chamber of Commerce will find our city a good place from which to help its members access more Asian business opportunities."
