New taxi fares and extension of restricted zone relaxation for taxis
***********************************************************

The Transport Department (TD) announced today (December 6) that the new taxi fares will take effect from December 8, 2013 (Sunday). In addition, the existing relaxation of peak-hour and 7am to 7pm no-stopping restrictions on roads with speed limits less than 70 kilometres per hour for taxis will be extended to January 31, 2015.

The fares for urban, New Territories (NT) and Lantau taxis from December 8, 2013 (Sunday) are as follows:

Taxi drivers have to charge according to taximeters. From December 8, 2013, if taximeters are yet to be adjusted to reflect the new fares, taxi drivers have to display the fare conversion tables issued by the TD (see Annex). Taxi passengers have to pay the new fares according to the conversion tables. When taxi drivers charge fares according to the conversion tables, the fare amount based on the new fares has to be written down on fare receipts issued to taxi passengers.

Members of the public may call the 1823 Call Centre or browse the TD website at www.td.gov.hk for more details on the new taxi fares.

Meanwhile, as the existing relaxation of peak-hour and 7am to 7pm no-stopping restrictions on roads with speed limits less than 70 kilometres per hour for taxis has not caused traffic obstruction on the whole, and can enable taxis to provide better point-to-point service to passengers, the Government decided to extend the relaxation for 12 months, from February 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015. As in the current arrangement, taxis will not be allowed to wait for passengers in these restricted zones. Taxi drivers should continue to exercise self-discipline and to strictly observe the "pick up, drop-off and go" and "no waiting" rules. The TD and the Police will closely monitor the implementation situation of this relaxation scheme. If there are violations of the rules causing obstruction to other road users, the Government will consider terminating the relaxation scheme wholly or in part before the expiry of the relaxation.

New restricted zone permits will be issued to all taxis to replace the old ones to be expired on January 31, 2014. The TD will inform taxi owners and drivers the detailed arrangement for collecting the new restricted zone permits in due course.
