**********************************************************

The Information Services Department (ISD) has today (November 25) launched both iPad and Android applications for the latest yearbook, "Hong Kong 2012".

The apps can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store or Google Play by searching for "Hong Kong Yearbook" or via the following links: (itunes.apple.com/app/id740435888) (iPad version); (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.gov.isd.hkyb) (Android version).

"While this is the third year we have had an iPad App, it is the first time we have provided an Android version due to the increasing popularity of Android devices," an Information Services Department spokesman said.

"We hope the new Android version will provide a useful and convenient avenue for more members of the public to access the yearbook content.

"Another new initiative is an individual browsing section for online video clips that supplement the pictorial sections. Previously, the videos were included as part of the photo sections."

"Hong Kong 2012" provides an in-depth account of government policy and activities and an overview of Hong Kong's development during the year.

The yearbook contains a wealth of facts and figures about Hong Kong, including over 40 tables of statistics and an endpaper map showing population density.

The yearbook's 21 chapters cover subjects ranging from Hong Kong's constitution and legal system, the economy, commerce and industry, employment, education, health and social welfare to the environment, recreation, sports and the arts.

The front cover shows a graphical depiction of fireworks over Hong Kong's skyline in 2012 marking the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

"Hong Kong 2012" features more than 80 photographs in 12 photo sections on events, people and places in Hong Kong, including sections on sports, urban greenery, religious architecture, art in the city and working dogs in government.

The apps are available in Traditional Chinese and English.

Apart from being accessible through the App Store and Google Play, the apps can also be downloaded via the ISD website, www.isd.gov.hk, or the government yearbook website, www.yearbook.gov.hk, connecting to the App Store and Google Play.
