Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, after attending an engagement session to promote the sustainable development of the recycling industry today (November 15):

Secretary for the Environment: We set up the Steering Committee to Promote the Sustainable Development of the Recycling Industry in Hong Kong since this August which is a very good platform to firstly align the support from different bureaux and departments within the Government. Secondly, it is a very good platform to collect opinions from the industry, including the academia, green groups and other stakeholders, about the recycling industry in Hong Kong. Today is a conference with more than 100 stakeholders who give views on each major recyclable in Hong Kong about how each of them could be promoted in Hong Kong so that we can reduce our landfill burden. We have to understand the ecology of each recyclable type so that their value can be upkeep and also their volume in the landfills can be reduced. We will follow up on each of these sectors. Our consultant will contact them in the near future so that we can formulate the policy on land, subsidies and other support, etc.
