Voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme extended to gas cookers
************************************************************

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (November 14) extended the voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (EELS) to cover gas cookers.

The EMSD is inviting manufacturers, importers and local agents of gas cookers to apply for energy labels under the voluntary EELS. To qualify for this type of label, the product should meet the scheme's energy efficiency and performance requirements.

With the inclusion of gas cookers, there are now 21 types of household and office appliance covered by the voluntary scheme, which was introduced in 1995 by the EMSD. Additionally, a mandatory EELS was introduced in 2009 and currently covers five types of household appliance.

The EELS aims to help consumers select more energy-efficient products, increase public awareness of the importance of using energy-efficient products, encourage manufacturers and product suppliers to market more energy-efficient products and achieve actual energy savings. With the energy labels, consumers can make informed choices to help the environment by choosing energy-efficient products.

Information about the EELS is available on the EMSD homepage (www.emsd.gov.hk). Enquiries about the extension of the voluntary EELS can be made by post to the Energy Efficiency Office of the EMSD at 3 Kai Shing Street, Kowloon, by telephone at 2808 3465 or by email to eepublic@emsd.gov.hk.
