The local premieres of three films financed by the Film Development Fund (FDF), "Kick Ass Girls", "Bends" and "Doomsday•Party", will be held in the coming fortnight from today (November 12) onwards to showcase the unlimited creativity of new-generation directors in Hong Kong.
Directed by Ms Vincci Cheuk, "Kick Ass Girls" is an action comedy which portrays three young women falling prey to the temptation of a sizeable reward. The production budget of the film was about $9 million and the amount financed by the FDF was $2.25 million.
"Bends", the directorial debut of director Ms Flora Lau, is a story about an abandoned wife of a wealthy businessman and her chauffeur who are both overwhelmed by sudden changes in their lives. The production budget of the film was about $10 million and the amount financed by the FDF was $4 million.
Directed by another new director, Mr Ho Hong, "Doomsday•Party" depicts a story of five ordinary people getting caught in a bank robbery and having their lives forever changed. The production budget of the film was about $8.46 million and the amount financed by the FDF was $3.38 million.
The Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, Mr Wellington Fung, said, "The three films directed by local up-and-coming directors are of various genres. Their achievements have been widely acclaimed. Through financing the film productions, the FDF helps nurture talents and inject new blood into the local film industry."
Among the three films, "Doomsday•Party" won the 2013 Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum Award (Hong Kong Project) and was invited to join the 2013 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. "Bends" was selected for competition in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2013 Festival de Cannes.
Since the Government injected $300 million into the FDF and expanded its scope to finance small to medium-budget film productions in October 2007, the financing scheme has approved 29 applications involving total funding of $80.72 million. Together with the above three films, a total of 19 FDF-financed films have been screened in Hong Kong.
