Housing Department promotes fire safety in public housing (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

     The Housing Department today (November 9) called on residents of public housing estates to take extra fire safety precautions during the dry season to safeguard life and property, and join hands to promote safe and happy living.

     Speaking at the launching ceremony of the Estate Fire Safety Campaign 2013 organised by the Housing Authority, the Director of Housing, Mr D W Pescod, said, "The Housing Department has been putting great efforts in promoting fire safety. Apart from good maintenance and house-keeping of fire services installations in housing estates, the Department launches a series of publicity and education programmes in all housing estates to promote the residential tenants' awareness on fire safety."

     A prize presentation for the Award Scheme on Promotion of Fire Safety was held in the ceremony. The Award Scheme was launched in all housing estates to encourage residents to take proactive roles in promoting fire safety awareness. Publicity activities were orgainsed to raise awareness among tenants about fire prevention and how to respond in the case of fire. Mr Pescod commended the winning estates for their efforts and contributions in promoting fire safety environment. He also demonstrated the proper use of hosereel.   

     The event was co-organised by Fire Services Department. There was demonstration of the work of firemen and investigation dog in fire-fighting and rescue at the ceremony. The tenants had a better understanding of the work of fire services.
    
     The Fire Safety Carnival was also held simultaneously with today's ceremony. Game booths, display panels and fire engine-shaped bouncers were arranged in the carnival. A fire engine and a mobile publicity unit were also parked near the carnival for public's visit.  

     The Housing Department will continue its efforts to promote fire safety through publicity and educational programmes for tenants to master the basic fire safety measures and the usage of fire services installations. Fire drills are also conducted on a regular basis to familiarise tenants with escape routes and emergency measures.
