Online voting starts for Southern District Literary Trail mobile app designs
**********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Southern District Council:

The Southern District Council (SDC) is now designing mobile applications for smartphones and tablets (apps) for the landmarks of the Southern District Literary Trail. The public are invited to vote online for their favourite design from today (November 1).

Southern District has a strong tradition of literary culture and is a source of inspiration for a number of modern and contemporary literary figures. Based on the book "Literary Walk in Hong Kong" written by Xiao Si, the SDC has recently launched the Southern District Literary Trail with landmarks to be established along the way to trace the footprints of notable literati, namely Eileen Chang, Xiao Hong, Xu Dishan, Cai Yuanpei and Hu Shih. Through this journey, the public can reminisce about them and gain a better understanding of their works and lives.

The landmarks of these five notable literati were designed by students of the School of Design of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (School). Tender invitation for the construction of landmark sculptures will be held by the end of 2013, and related works will be carried out in phases from 2014 onwards. To add fun to the trail, the SDC has also invited students of the School's Interactive Media Programme to design apps for smartphones and tablets with reference to the five landmarks. Five outstanding mobile apps have been selected by a panel comprising Professor Huang Zi-ping of Hong Kong Baptist University, Professor John Carroll of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Mr Tarloff Im of HKUSPACE (New Media and Communication), District Officer (Southern) and SDC members.

To encourage active public participation, the SDC now invites the public to vote for their favourite app design by visiting www.travelsouth.hk/projects/sdlt_app/ from today until December 31. The design with the highest number of votes will be honoured with the Most Popular Design award. The SDC will announce the result in early 2014 and will conduct a prize-giving ceremony.

The Southern District Literary Trail is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. For details, please visit www.travelsouth.hk/en/history-monuments/sdliteratureroute/intro .
