New Energy Series to present three new theatre productions
**********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's New Energy Series presents three theatre productions by local young theatre troupes to be staged in December.

"A Glimpse of Heaven" by Metro-HoliK Studio will be staged from December 6 to 8. The story follows the endlessly ongoing connections between a pair of separated lovers. Pak Li is the producer and playwright of this production while Octavian Chan is the director. The cast includes Sam Choy and Phoebe Fung. Metro-HoliK Studio was founded in 2010 by Octavian Chan, who won the Young Artists Award at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards; Sam Choy, RTHK co-host of "We Are Family"; and Pak Li, winner of the Hong Kong Theatre Libre for Best Screenplay, with artistic adviser Ms May Law, a senior lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, also part of the team. Metro-HoliK Studio's previous productions have received critical and popular acclaim including the nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 22nd Hong Kong Drama Awards, as well as winning Best Screenplay and obtaining three nominations at the 5th Hong Kong Theatre Libre with their original production "So Long, Farewell! H.K.".

"The Dawn" by Piece by Piece will be staged from December 13 to 15, and tells the story of two youngsters searching their real lives. Piece by Piece was founded in 2011 by Hung Chan and Kenneth Tsang. Hung Chan is the production team's dramaturge, Iwai Remu is director and video designer and Wu Li is the illustrator, while the cast includes Grace Yuen and Oliver Shing. The company is committed to exploring the heart of contemporary man using a no-frills theatrical style. They believe that art, like a piece of paper, is simple yet has the potential for change. It can take from life and extract its essence for life's future use. Apart from creating new works for theatre, the company works in collaboration with painters and photographers on the arts education project "light up our heART", a hybrid form of visual arts and theatre. They also give workshops in primary and secondary schools and among the community.

"Black Bird Annals: The Head of Ostrich" by Black Bird Theatre will be staged from December 19 to 22. The story focuses on a man who decides to break from normal life and make an important decision about his future. Tang Sai-cheong is the playwright and director while performing artists include Or Ka-kee, Kwok Chui-yi, Leung Tsz-fung, Wong Hiu-yi and Alan Yeung@juicyning. Black Bird Theatre was founded in 2009 and its members include Tang Sai-cheong, Or Ka-kee, Kwok Chui-yi, Leung Tsz-fung and Yu Toi-ling. Over the years, the troupe created the "-less" trilogy using the "devising theatre" method and text-based original works. Last year, they participated in the first Hong Kong People's Fringe Festival with "Run Bunny Run", which explored the modern significance of war against the backdrop of an oversized popup book. In 2013, it produced the romantic light comedy "Weebly", a critique of the "new" relationship between the sexes. The troupe's mission is to capture society's contemporary outlook, and enable the new generation to get in touch with and understand the nature of theatre through a distinctly unique vernacular, physical movements and a multimedia format mixing video and the visual arts.
