Terem-Quartet, renowned as a Russian national treasure, will perform in the Hong Kong City Hall on November 2. Blending classical, jazz, tango, rock, Russian folk and pop, the Quartet performs a diverse range of musical styles with traditional folk instruments.
Whether performing original compositions or timeless adaptations, Terem-Quartet presents a fresh approach that showcases versatility and improvisational talent. The Quartet has thrilled audiences with exhilarating, Russian-style crossover concerts at leading international venues, including London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
The Quartet will offer an electrifying range of works from masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Schubert and Piazzolla to classic film scores infused with a piquant Russian flavour. Russian traditional stringed instruments such as the balalaika and the domra, as well as the accordion bayan, will add another level of originality to the performances. The group's unique approach expands the musical possibilities of these folk instruments as well as the types of works performed.
The Russian word "terem" has many connotations. It originally referred to the highest place in a house where women lived before they were married. More recently, it has taken on the meaning of a traditional Russian-style wooden building, a magical fairy tale land shared by different creatures, or a beautiful dream. Encompassing these various meanings, Terem-Quartet's name represents a large roof under which cultures and musical styles from around the world are brought together.
Founded in St Petersburg in 1986, Terem-Quartet has become a local cultural icon, being named Group of the Year in 1997 and receiving the prestigious Golden Soffit Award. Over the years, the award-winning group has built up an impressive repertoire of 500 works and has given more than 2,500 concerts in over 60 countries.
A talk entitled "New Frontiers for Russian Folk Instruments" will be held at 7.30pm on November 1 at AC1, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Terem-Quartet will introduce their instruments' history and characteristics, along with innovative techniques for playing them. The talk will be conducted in Russian with English and Cantonese interpretation. Admission is free. Limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The concert by Terem-Quartet is one of the programmes of "World Cultures Festival 2013 - Lasting Legacies of Eastern Europe" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm on November 2 at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall. Tickets priced at $150, $200, $250 and $300 are available at URBTIX.
Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and their minders, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. Other booking discounts of up to 20 per cent are available.
