The winning entries of the open and student categories of the 23rd Chinese Poetry Writing Competition, organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), showed the writers' creativity in Chinese classical poetry on topics ranging from nature and daily life to personal feelings.
Mr Chau Kai-chau's outstanding seven-character regulated poem was the winner in the open category while Mr Liu Han-qing, a student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was awarded first prize in the student category. Their distinctive poems focused on dentures and Laoshan Mountain respectively.
Other winning works also reflected a variety of topics including hiking, boating, the weather and its seasons, ice-cream in summer, a disaster at sea and caring scavengers.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony held today (September 26) at the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL), the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Libraries and Development), Mr Lee Yuk-man, pointed out that classical Chinese poetry is highly regarded, with many treasures of classical Chinese literature still recited today.
Mr Lee said that to promote greater interest and appreciation of Chinese poetry and writing the HKPL has developed a collection of Chinese literary works and since 1991 has organised the annual poetry competition.
A series of tie-in talks was also held to promote writing and appreciation of rhyming literature in Chinese, he added.
The adjudicators for this year's competition were Professor Ho Man-wui, Professor Chow Sik-fuk, Professor Chan Chi-ching, Professor Wong Kwan-io and Professor Lau Wai-lam.
More than 1 200 entries were received in the competition. Participants used either five-character regulated poetry or seven-character regulated poetry to showcase their creativity, with topics ranging from descriptions of nature, travel experiences and day-to-day life to personal feelings.
The competition consisted of the student category and the open category, each with a First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, five Merit Prizes and two Special Prizes. The winners' lists are as follows:

The 23rd Chinese Poetry Writing Competition's winning works will be on display from tomorrow (September 27) until October 28 at the foyer on the ground floor of the HKCL. A roving exhibition will be held at various public libraries starting from next month. The winning entries will also be uploaded onto the HKPL's website at www.hkpl.gov.hk/poetrywriting for public viewing from October.
