The Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, visited Kwun Tong today (September 24) to learn more about the Kwun Tong Town Centre Project. He also visited a social service organisation, chatted with rehabilitated drug abusers and met with District Councillors to learn about their views and concerns regarding the district.

Accompanied by the Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council, Mr Chan Chung-bun, and the District Officer (Kwun Tong), Mr Gilford Law, Mr Lai visited Yue Man Square where he was briefed by the Director of Kwun Tong Project of the Urban Renewal Authority, Dr Ernest Lee, on the latest developments of the Kwun Tong Town Centre Project. He then paid a site visit to see for himself the progress of land resumption at the main site.

Mr Lai then proceeded to Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service Evergreen Lutheran Centre, where he was briefed on the centre's services. The centre is one of the 11 counselling centres subsidised by the Social Welfare Department for psychotropic substance abusers. It provides a wide range of services, including counselling services for psychotropic substance abusers, seminars for secondary students to understand the harmful effects of psychotropic substance abuse, training for youth workers and other related professionals in handling drug issues, and outreaching services for psychotropic substance abusers to help them build a healthy lifestyle to quit drugs.

During the visit, Mr Lai enjoyed a music performance by the centre's rehabilitated drug abusers and listened to their experience on their rehabilitation journey.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Lai met with Kwun Tong District Councillors and exchanged views with them on law and order matters and other community issues concerned.
