SED visits Wan Chai District (with photos)
******************************************

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (August 28) visited Wan Chai District. He called at some community facilities, where he talked to youngsters and encouraged them to develop their potential based on their own interests.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Wan Chai), Miss Angela Luk, Mr Ng first visited the Methodist Centre at Lockhart Road to see for himself its counselling and integrated employment service. In addition to offering employment training as well as support and counselling services, the Centre also provides the needy with comprehensive and diversified services to enhance their employability and emotion management skills.

The Centre houses a number of multi-purpose classrooms with designated teaching facilities for practical lessons, including massage beds, beauty equipment and computers, as well as living and dining room, kitchen, lavatory, bathroom and hotel room simulations.

Mr Ng observed a lesson under the Youth Employment and Training Programme during which he talked with the candidates on their aspirations and ambitions, and gave them words of encouragement.

He then visited the Comix Home Base at Mallory Street, which is a collaborative project of the Urban Renewal Authority and the Hong Kong Arts Centre revitalising a cluster of 10 pre-war Grade 2 historic buildings.

Officially opened last month, the Comix Home Base brands Wan Chai as Hong Kong's first art community for home-grown comics and animation. Serving as a platform for communication and interchange between local and overseas artists, for nurturing comics and animation talents and for promoting related products, the new project can strengthen the development of creative industries in Hong Kong.

Mr Ng pointed out that young people are the future of our community and the Education Bureau has attached great importance to providing opportunities for students to develop their multiple intelligences.

"In addition to academic subjects, the New Senior Secondary (NSS) Curriculum also provides 37 applied learning subjects for students to choose from, allowing them a better understanding of various professions and workplaces," he said.

"The NSS Curriculum also emphasises the importance of other learning experiences. With strengthened contacts with the community and different organisations, students can have their life experience enriched and spirit of service developed.

"In the meantime, we encourage schools to render necessary assistance to students in their career planning. By providing appropriate guidance, schools can help their students identify their needs for further studies and employment, and make an informed choice along the multiple pathways ahead," he added.

Mr Ng also met with the Chairman of the Wan Chai District Council, Mr Suen Kai-cheong, and other District Council Members to exchange views on various issues.
