Globally renowned for more than 40 years, Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung will return to Hong Kong for a recital in late October.
The long-awaited recital will take place at 8pm on October 31 (Thursday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Accompanied by pianist Kevin Kenner, Chung will perform Beethoven's "Violin Sonata No. 5 in F, Spring", Grieg's "Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Minor", Mozart's "Violin Sonata in G" and Franck's "Violin Sonata in A".
Kyung-Wha Chung was born into a musical family in Korea and began studying violin at the age of 6. At the age of 12 she left her native country to study with Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School in New York, and was coached further by Joseph Szigeti and Szymon Goldberg. After winning the Leventritt Competition in 1967, she embarked upon her career in North America, appearing with most of the world's finest orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Chung has been one of the most sought-after musicians on the international stage. She has earned recognition worldwide as a performing artist of the very highest stature: in 1972 the Korean government awarded her its highest honour, the Medal of Civil Merit, and she has been cited by the Sunday Times of London as one of the most important contributors to the British cultural scene. The depth of her musicianship, commitment and passion for her art has characterised her performances and recordings. After a seven-year hiatus due to an injury, she resumed her performing career in 2011 and proved in her recital in Seoul that she had grown further and deeper as a consummate artist, bringing out a passionate, overflowing response from her fans.
"Encore Series - Violin Recital by Kyung-Wha Chung" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $200, $320, $420, $520 and $620 will be available from tomorrow (August 29) onwards at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 10 per cent is offered for the "Great Music" booking package. Please refer to the programme leaflets for details.
A pre-concert talk by the associate concertmaster of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Kitty Cheung, will be held at 6.45pm on October 31 at the Foyer, Level 4, Auditoria Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Conducted in Cantonese, the talk will be free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
Other programmes in the "Great Music" series include "Sing Brother Sing" by Tian Haojiang on October 26 and 27 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and "Encore Series - Magdalena Kožená and Private Musicke" on November 10 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
