The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, visited Guangzhou today (August 27) to speak at the exchange conference on liberalisation of trade in services between Hong Kong and Guangdong 2013.

A joint venture by the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of Guangdong Provincial People's Government, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Guangdong, the conference includes officials and academics of Guangdong Province and business heavyweights from Hong Kong gathering to share their insights on the importance of the liberalisation of trade in services, with an aim to promote economic and trade co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong.

Speaking at the conference, Mr So said the strong complementarity between the service sectors of Hong Kong and Guangdong was mutually beneficial to both places, as the Hong Kong service sector could help the upgrading and restructuring of Guangdong industries, and in return their room for development would be extended.

"Last year, Hong Kong and Guangdong signed a co-operation agreement on joint promotion of early achievement of liberalisation of trade in services between the two places to promote the liberalisation vigorously," Mr So said.

Looking ahead, Mr So said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government would continue to closely co-operate with the Guangdong provincial government to achieve the objective of early achievement of liberalisation of trade in services between the two places in 2014.

Today's conference also explored systems and models which could enable the early achievement of liberalisation, with a view to promoting closer collaboration between the service sectors of the two places.

Mr So will return to Hong Kong tonight.
