Recycling race, talent show, charity sale and family day camp among week's coming attractions (with photos)
*********************************************************

More than 100 secondary school students will join the Hong Kong Race on Plastics Separation 2013 at the Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Centre in Tuen Mun on August 23. This green education programme is a highlight event of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign this week.

The race will be held at a recycling plant where about 6 tonnes of plastic waste are processed every day. Participating students will be given an introduction to plastic waste management and recycling.

In one part of the competition, students must separate different types of plastics at the fastest speed and with the highest accuracy as they try to gather the greatest volume of plastic waste. In another contest, students will be given plastic waste to create attractive works of art.

The one-day event will conclude with a sharing session, during which the students will share their thoughts on the race as well as their views on plastic waste reduction and recycling.

The Super Star Talent Show events organised by the Methodist Centre could be the career launch pad for a new generation of talented entertainers. The next show in the series is scheduled for August 25, and will be held from 2pm to 4pm.

At the shows, which are being held on one Sunday each month until January 2014, the Methodist Centre sets up a stage underneath the flyover of Canal Road West in Wan Chai District to give amateur entertainers an opportunity to gain experience performing live on stage in front of an audience. The shows also provide a platform for amateur entertainers to share experiences with their peers.

The shows do not have restrictions on the types of performance - participants are free to sing, act, dance or play musical instruments - and the shows have become especially popular with new bands.

Each group or individual is allowed to perform for 10 to 15 minutes, and there are usually eight to 10 performances in each show.

Future show dates can be found on the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign's website (www.hkourhome.gov.hk) under the "Hip HK" event calendar for August.

People who are interested in performing can call 2555 7331 or email pds@methodist-centre.com.

The camp is being organised for parents with children aged 4 to 9. The programme is designed to enhance parent-child communication and family harmony.

The morning activities will involve fun games related to music and creative arts. Children will be given bottles, beans, paper and rice to make musical instruments.      On August 24 and 25, people can shop at the Tai Po Mega Mall to raise money for charity.

The mall will hold the "Kids Helping Kids" Charity Fund Raising Days in support of the "Kids Helping Kids" - Toys & Stationery Charity Donation Campaign to help children in need through the Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong.

The event will start at 1pm on August 24. A great variety of items will be available for purchase in a charity sale and prices will start from $10. The money raised will go to help children pay for their music lessons, art classes and extra-curricular activities.

Running alongside the charity sale will be a carnival that will include a host of entertainment including a magic show, musical instrument performances, a rope jumping show and more.

All these events support the "Hong Kong: Our Home" public participation campaign, which aims to inject positive energy into society, foster social cohesion and promote care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

More than 220 Partner Organisations have so far pledged support for the Campaign.

Altogether, the Government and Partner Organisations are organising more than 900 events/activities under the four supporting themes of the Campaign from the end of April to the end of December this year.

Full details of the Campaign can be found on the website www.hkourhome.gov.hk.
