The Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York (HKETONY), Miss Anita Chan, visited Vermont, USA on July 29 and 30 (Vermont time) to promote business ties between Hong Kong and the state.

In honour of her first official visit to the state on July 30, the Governor of the State of Vermont, Mr Peter Shumlin, issued a proclamation recognising the 30th Anniversary of the HKETONY and celebrating the growing trade ties between Hong Kong and Vermont.

Hong Kong is the third largest export destination for Vermont, after Canada and China. Exports from Vermont to Hong Kong in 2012 amounted to US$255 million. The top export items were computers and electronic products.

Miss Chan met with the Deputy Secretary of the Agency of Commerce and Community Development, Vermont, Ms Lucy Leriche, as well as the Commissioner of Tourism and Marketing, Vermont, Ms Megan Smith, to discuss co-operation opportunities between Hong Kong and Vermont.

Speaking to members of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon on July 30, Miss Chan highlighted Hong Kong's key attributes as an international business and financial centre, including its simple and low tax system as well as its excellent infrastructure and the ease of doing business in the city.

Separately, Miss Chan met the Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives, Mr Shap Smith, and members of the Vermont Council on World Affairs on July 29, and she spoke about Hong Kong's key role as the leading city for China's global finance and offshore Renminbi centre.
