Football stars, singing contests, neighbourhood carnival and ani-com event make action-packed week

     Sell-out crowds are expected as Hong Kong plays host to the Barclays Asia Trophy 2013 on July 24 and 27, with football fans from around the world cheering for their favourite players at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium.

     The Barclays Asia Trophy - the only Premier League-affiliated tournament to be held outside England - is the highlight event of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign this week.

     The tournament sees Hong Kong's South China Football Club, the 2012/2013 champion of the Hong Kong First Division League, compete with three English Premier League teams - last season's runners-up Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland in the two-day knock-out tournament.

     South China take on Manchester City at the team's home stadium in the first match day on July 24. The final kicks off at 8.30pm on July 27. May the best team win!

     The organisers of the 10th Singing Contest for Celebration of the 64th National Day of China are now inviting talented singers to show off their vocal skills by joining the contest. The enrolment deadline is July 27.

     The contestants choose one of three categories - solo, small group with a maximum of nine singers, or a choir with 10 or more singers.

     The preliminary round of the contest will be held on August 11 at the Hong Kong Society for the Blind headquarters in Sham Shui Po. The final round will be held on September 5 at Tsuen Wan Town Hall.

     The contest is jointly organised by the Committee of Hong Kong Social Welfare Service Organisations for Celebration of the 64th National Day of China and the Social Welfare Department.

     The first of three full-day workshops titled "Training Children to Manage Finance and Parents Talk" will take place on July 28 at the Grateful Heart Service Centre, Hong Tak Garden, Tuen Mun. The workshop is designed for children aged between seven and nine.

     Organised by the Tuen Mun District Women's Association, the workshops will teach children basic concepts of managing personal finance using games and field trips.

     In one exercise on saving and spending, the instructor will take the children shopping at a supermarket. When they return to the workshop the instructor will highlight any items that are unnecessary. The instructor will then explain to the children about the concept of needs and wants when managing money, and the importance of developing good spending habits.

     The second workshop will be held on August 11 for children aged from 10 to 12. The final workshop will be held on August 25 for parents and their children aged from 3 to 6.

     The Yau Tsim Mong Federation of Association and the Kowloon Federation of Associations Yau Tsim Mong District Committee will jointly hold an event titled "The Amazing History and Development of Yau Tsim Mong District" at Kowloon Park Piazza on July 28.

     The event includes a carnival, an exhibition and a guided walking tour around the neighbourhood.

     People of all ages will enjoy the rousing dragon dance, a muppet show, singing and dancing performances, as well as Chinese craft demonstrations such as making flour dolls. Carnival goers can also get face readings from fortune tellers or even ask a bird to pick a fortune card for them.

     An exhibition displaying pictures of Yau Tsim Mong District's past and present charms will interest both tourists and locals. Visitors can also learn about the district's history and development and its historical buildings and landmarks.

     Carnival goers can also sign up on the spot to join the one-hour guided walking tour and learn about the tourist hot spots as well as the district's historical landmarks such as the movie fans' favourite, the Avenue of Stars, the old Clock Tower which was erected in 1915 as part of the former Kowloon Canton Railway terminus in Tsim Sha Tsui, and the revitalised 1881 Heritage building, formerly the Marine Police Headquarters.

     The opening of Comix X Figures - Hong Kong Ani-Com Figure Show, one of the eight core programmes for the Hong Kong Ani-Com Summer 2013, should not be missed by comics and animation fans.

     The show offers crossover co-operations between 2D comics and 3D figure designs. The first stage of the show will run from July 26 to July 30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

     As a special attraction for this show, 20 figure artists and designers will recreate the comic characters on display in the Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars by sculpting new figures about 10 inches tall that reflect each designer's unique creative style. The 20 figurines will be on display at the show.

     The show will also display winning animations of the first Animation Start-ups Support Programme and the best works from the Hong Kong Comic Camp.

     The second stage of the show will be held from August 17 to September 1 at the Kowloon Park Arcade, Tsim Sha Tsui. Admission to both shows is free.

     All these events support the "Hong Kong: Our Home" public participation campaign, which aims to inject positive energy into society, foster social cohesion and promote care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

     More than 220 Partner Organisations have so far pledged their support for the Campaign.

     Altogether, the Government and Partner Organisations are organising more than 900 events/activities under the four supporting themes of the Campaign from the end of April to the end of December this year.
