"Building Safety Depends on All of Us" Comic Drawing Competition 2013 (with photos)
*****************************************************

The Buildings Department (BD) organised "The Building Safety Depends on All of Us" Comic Drawing Competition in April 2013 for primary and secondary school students. The objective was to promote the message about the importance of building safety to the younger generation. With the co-organisation of the Hong Kong Education City (HKedCity) and the support of the Hong Kong Society for Education in Art (HKSEA), the competition ended successfully in late June and the award presentation ceremony was held today (July 13).

The competition enabled students to express their knowledge on building safety by interesting means of comic drawings. In order to encourage their participation, a building safety concepts and comic skills workshop was arranged for teachers and students on April 13. In the workshop, the four main concepts of building safety, namely, structural safety, fire safety, environmental hygiene and public safety were introduced by staff of the BD, followed by demonstration of basic comic drawing techniques by a famous comic illustrator. Teachers who have attended the workshop could then inspire students in their schools and arouse their creative potential and interest to participate in the competition.

The competition was divided into three sections for upper primary, junior secondary and senior secondary students. Very positive responses and a large number of submissions were received for each section. More than 60 primary and secondary schools participated in the competition and nearly 900 artwork pieces were submitted.

The judging panel included members of the organiser, co-organiser and the famous comic illustrator. They commented that most of the submitted artwork could express building safety concepts with appropriate means to address building safety problems. Also, the artwork pieces were presented with a high standard of comic drawing skills.

Finally, the champion, the first and second runner-up, ten merit awards, three most popular awards-online and the most supportive school award for each section were selected.

The results of the competition have been uploaded to the HKedCity website: www.hkedcity.net/buildingsafetycomic/eng/intro.html.

The BD believes that the messages of building safety were appropriately delivered to the younger generation and teachers through the competition. With a better understanding on building safety, they could develop a sense of responsibility to the living environment and promote a culture of building care to their family and the community.

The BD would like to express its cordial gratitude to all participating schools and organisations. Without their support, the competition would not have such a successful and fruitful result. Various promotional events and activities will continue to be carried out to disseminate the messages about the importance of building safety to students and the general public.
