CE commends teachers for teaching excellence (with video)

The following is issued on behalf of the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence Steering Committee:

     The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (July 12) presented the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (CEATE) (2012/2013) to 20 school teachers at an award presentation ceremony held at the Central Government Offices.

     The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, presented the Certificate of Merit to 39 teachers.

     Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the CEATE Steering Committee, Mr Duffy Wong, said, "The teaching philosophies and practices of these teachers are outstanding and innovative, and are effective in enhancing students' motivation, their ability for in-depth analysis and self-directed learning. These teachers not only impart knowledge and skills to their students but also help them develop positive values."

     Noting that some 650 outstanding teachers have been awarded since the launch of CEATE, Mr Wong said that the CEATE Teachers Association, comprising all the awarded teachers, had been actively building up different sharing and exchange platforms for the dissemination of good teaching practices through various channels. These included demonstration lessons, seminars, e-Newsletters, newspaper columns, teacher development days in schools, the annual large-scale "Showcase" event and other dissemination activities. In November 2012, the Association and the Education Bureau also produced videos on the awarded teachers for broadcasting on buses.

     Other officiating guests were the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mrs Cherry Tse; the Chairman of the Education Commission, Dr Moses Cheng; the Chairperson of the Committee on Professional Development of Teachers and Principals, Dr Carrie Willis; the Chairperson of the Curriculum Development Council, Professor Kenneth Young; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, Mr Rock Chen; the Chairman of the CEATE High-level Advisory Panel (2012/2013), Mr Cheung Pak-hong; and the Chairman of the CEATE Assessment Working Group (2012/2013), Professor Horace Ip.

     This year's CEATE covered three themes - Guidance and Discipline, Science Education Key Learning Area and Technology Education Key Learning Area. A total of 143 nominations was received. Nine nominations (comprising 20 teachers) were selected for the Award for Teaching Excellence while 12 nominations (comprising 39 teachers) were presented with the Certificate of Merit.

     Assessment of nominations focused on teachers' performance in the four domains of professional competence, student development, professionalism and commitment to the community, and school development.

     The results of CEATE (2012/2013) are available on the CEATE website (www.ate.gov.hk). "CEATE - Reflection of Excellent Teachers", a special TVB programme on exemplary teaching practices, will be broadcast on TVB Jade at 3.30 pm on July 21 (Sunday).

     Sharing activities on excellent teaching practices will be rolled out in the coming school year. Details will be announced on the CEATE website.

     Nominations for CEATE (2013/2014) will be accepted from July 15 to October 4. It will cover Curriculum Leadership, Liberal Studies, Personal, Social and Humanities Education Key Learning Area and Physical Education Key Learning Area. Related details will be uploaded to the CEATE website on July 15.
