Over 600 primary students appointed as Water Conservation Ambassadors (with photos)
**********************************************************

A total of 616 primary students were appointed as Water Conservation Ambassadors at the fifth certificate presentation ceremony of the Water Conservation Ambassador Selection Scheme held by the Water Supplies Department (WSD) today (July 9). The record-high number shows the growing awareness among students of the importance of water conservation in daily life.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Ma Lee-tak, said that the WSD has been endeavouring to promote water conservation through interactive educational activities, such as inspiring the young generation to think about the principle of saving water. He hoped that through participation in the activities, students would think about their relationship with water resources and the Earth, and understand that water conservation requires persistence and contributes to the stable and sustainable development of society.

The Water Conservation Ambassadors Selection Scheme is a highlight of the "Water Conservation Starts from Home" promotional campaign launched by the WSD in all primary schools in 2009 to encourage youngsters to treasure water resources. Ambassadors are selected based on the number of household members and data collected from participants on their average daily domestic water consumption. More than 2 200 Ambassadors have been appointed over the years.

The Scheme this year has attracted about 3 600 students from 31 primary schools. More than 10 schools have taken part in consecutive years, joining with the WSD to nurture a culture of water conservation among the young generation.

Also officiating at today's ceremony were members of the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies, including the Chairman, Dr Chan Hon-fai; the Chairperson of the Working Group on Public Education, Ms Nicole Wong; the Chairperson of the Working Group on Publication of Water Quality Data, Dr Richard Cheung; and the Chairperson of the Working Group on Quality of Water in Buildings, Mr Ivan Lau.

The list of winning students and schools is available on the WSD's website (www.wsd.gov.hk).
