Opening of library and sports centre, street dance, singing contest and nature talk fill Campaign calendar from July 8 to 14 (with photos)

     The coming week sees the opening of the Ping Shan Tin Shui Wai Leisure and Cultural Building, which houses an eight-storey library and a five-storey sports centre with an indoor heated swimming pool. A highlight event of "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign, the building will officially open on July 12.

     The library will be Hong Kong's second largest, and the only one boasting an outdoor courtyard where people can relax and read in the open air.

     In addition to the pool the sports centre will offer a variety of facilities including a multi-purpose function room that can be used for table tennis or yoga classes and a toddlers' playroom.

     Visitors to the building at Tsui Sing Road, Tin Shui Wai can also enjoy two giant paintings depicting the Hong Kong cityscape on both sides of Victoria Harbour, which were specially created for the launch of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign on April 23.

     The colourful art display will be staged until August 11. Admission is free.

     Upbeat music will be played throughout the afternoon on July 14 at the Tin Fai Road Community Hall in Tin Shui Wai. More than 100 young and energetic contestants will be there to show off their dancing skills in the "BATTLE 2013" Street Dance Competition, part of the Yuen Long Youth Festival.

     Three categories of dance are involved in the competition, namely the Free-style Choreography Championship, the Breaking Championship (break dance) and the All Style Championship, which includes dance routines such as popping, locking, break dance, house and hip-hop.

     The venue is open to the public from 12.45pm. Admission is free.

     The 27th Kwai Tsing District New Talent Singing Contest will be held on July 14 and is open to Hong Kong residents aged 15 to 25.

     The preliminary round will be held at Kwai Fong Community Hall, where 16 outstanding contestants will be selected to enter the final round on August 11.

     Experienced singing coaches and veteran musicians will serve as judges. Several winners of previous contests have since become professional singers and actors.

     Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

     A talk titled "Amazing Rocks and Sea Arches in Hong Kong", part of the "Live Nature" series, will be held at the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on July 14, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

     Co-organised by the Sai Kung District Community Centre (SKDCC) and the South China Research Centre of the HKUST, the talk will cover Hong Kong's geology and specific rock features, and Sai Kung's geographic position in relation to the formation of sea caves in the area.

     The speaker, Mr Alan Lau, has published a book based on the 500 or so sea caves that are found along Hong Kong's coastlines.

     Other highlight activities this week include the 9th Hong Kong Butterfly Race, to be held at the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve in Tai Po on July 14; the Central and Western District Youth Day at the Smithfield Sports Centre in Kennedy Town on July 14; and the "Comic Zone" exhibition featuring comics development in Hong Kong, to be held at Po Leung Kuk Energetic Youth Club at 38 Wang Yip Street East in Yuen Long until the end of August.

     All these events support the "Hong Kong: Our Home" public participation campaign, which aims to inject positive energy into society, foster social cohesion and promote care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

     More than 220 Partner Organisations have so far pledged their support for the Campaign.

     Altogether, the Government and Partner Organisations are organising more than 700 events/activities under the four supporting themes of the Campaign from the end of April to the end of December this year.
