Appointment of SFC Executive Director

     The Financial Secretary has appointed Mr James Shipton as an Executive Director of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) under the authority delegated by the Chief Executive pursuant to the Securities and Futures Ordinance (Cap. 571). The appointment is for a term of three years from June 19, 2013, to June 18, 2016.

     Announcing the appointment today (June 18), a government spokesman said, "Mr Shipton was selected through a global and open recruitment exercise by a selection panel chaired by the Chairman of the SFC. Mr Shipton will head a new integrated division in the SFC comprising the Intermediaries Supervision and Licensing Departments. We are confident that he will contribute towards the efficient performance of the SFC's statutory functions, in particular regarding intermediaries supervision and licensing."

     Before joining the SFC, Mr Shipton was Goldman Sachs' Asia Pacific Head of Government and Regulatory Affairs and a Managing Director in Goldman's Asian Executive Office. Mr Shipton has extensive experience in the financial services sector and has worked in Australia, Bangkok, Singapore and London as well as Hong Kong. He was admitted as barrister and solicitor in Victoria, Australia, in 1997, as solicitor in England and Wales in 1998, and as solicitor in Hong Kong in 1999.
