Companies fined for illegal club operations
*******************************************

Three companies were fined $1,000 to $2,500 at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (June 11) for contravening the Clubs (Safety of Premises) Ordinance.

The courts heard that in November last year, the Office of the Licensing Authority (OLA) of the Home Affairs Department conducted inspections at three clubs in Central and Causeway Bay, which have been operating with a certificate of compliance (CoC).

OLA officers posed as customers and patronised the club on Lower Albert Road for food and drinks without being asked to show their membership status or being invited to join the club. Also, the actual layout of the club on D'Aguilar Street was found to have deviated from the registered drawings. Conditions 19 and 3 of the CoC were breached respectively.

Furthermore, OLA officers found that the actual layout of the club on Jaffe Road had deviated from the registered drawings and its exit route was blocked. Conditions 3 and 9 of the CoC were breached.

The three companies, being the CoC holders, were charged with contravening section 21(2) of the Ordinance.

A spokesman for the department reminded all CoC holders to comply with the conditions as stipulated therein. Enforcement action would continue to be taken against illegal club operations.
