Margaret Lau to continue popular ballet appreciation lecture series

     Local ballet educator Margaret Lau will continue the popular Ballet Appreciation Lecture Series from July to September.

     The new instalment of the series will focus on full-length ballets and short pieces, and will cover productions of various lengths and from different periods. Through appreciating the performances of internationally renowned ballet companies and their top dancers, dance enthusiasts will be able to see the different styles and subject matter of classical and modern full-length works as well as signature short pieces in ballet. Audiences will also be able to understand further the two different creative directions of dramatic ballet and non-narrative ballet.

     The 10 lectures will take place at AC1, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. They will be conducted in Cantonese and supplemented with English, and will commence at 7.30pm. Details are as follows:

July 11 (Thursday): A love tragedy - "Romeo & Juliet"

July 18 (Thursday): Nijinsky's classics - "Le Spectre de la Rose", "Scheherazade" and "Petrushka"

August 1 (Thursday): An exotic story about love - "La Bayadère"

August 8 (Thursday): Beauty to hear and behold - "Bolero", "Elite Syncopations" and "Serenade"

August 15 (Thursday): Pasión Espaõola - "Don Quixote"

August 22 (Thursday): Revival and renewal of ballet classics - "The Firebird", "Scènes de ballet" and "Carmina Burana"

August 29 (Thursday): A new adaptation of a Russian ballet - "The Flames of Paris"

September 5 (Thursday): The captivating charm of ballet blanc - "La Sylphide" and "Chroma"

September 12 (Thursday): One-of-a-kind romantic ballet - "Ondine"

September 19 (Thursday): British humour - "Hobson's Choice"

     Margaret Lau holds a bachelor of arts degree and a postgraduate diploma in education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a master of arts degree from the University of Hong Kong. A dance critic and feature writer for various magazines and newspapers in Hong Kong, she has worked as a researcher for the ballet section of the publication "A Dance History of Hong Kong". Her other engagements include writing feature articles, conducting dance talks and translating house programmes for dance performances. She was the translator of teaching materials and prospectuses for the teaching certificate programmes of the Royal Academy of Dance.

     The lectures are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and tickets priced at $50 for each lecture are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10 per cent discount is offered for a single purchase of tickets for five lectures or more.
