CE starts visit to New York (with photos)
*****************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (June 10, New York time) started his visit to New York, the US, his first official overseas visit since taking office in July 2012.

Mr Leung began the day by attending a breakfast meeting hosted by the Hong Kong Association of New York. He briefed the participants on the HKSAR Government's endeavours to enhance both the internal relations with the Mainland of China and the external relations with partners around the world.

The Chief Executive then met with the President of New York City Economic Development Corporation, Mr Seth Pinsky, and exchanged views on enhancing economic growth and development in both cities. He then attended a lunch hosted by the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in New York, Mr Sun Guoxiang.

In the afternoon, Mr Leung visited the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the largest stock market in the world in terms of market capitalisation. He met with the Chief Executive Officer of NYSE, Mr Duncan Niederauer, and updated him on the increasingly important role of Hong Kong as China's global financial centre.  Mr Leung was invited to ring the closing bell at NYSE.

The Chief Executive then met with the Mayor of New York City, Mr Michael Bloomberg and took the opportunity to introduce Hong Kong's unique role as a connector between the Mainland of China and the rest of the world. They also exchanged views on how both cities can work together to tackle climate change and other environmental issues. This meeting is rescheduled from the morning to the afternoon.

In the evening, the Chief Executive addressed a reception hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York, for the opening of the Hong Kong Movie Week of the New York Asian Film Festival.

Mr Leung said that Hong Kong, as an international city, embraced borderless collaboration in filmmaking and other creative sectors.

"Not only is our city a creative and cultural hub, we are also a connector-in-chief by linking overseas filmmaking companies to the opportunities in the Mainland of China, including the investment opportunities, creative opportunities and opportunity to reach large new and eager audiences.

"Filmmakers from New York to Hollywood to Bollywood and elsewhere can team up with Hong Kong partners for groundbreaking co-productions that enjoy preferential access to markets in the Mainland of China.  This is possible under our free trade pact, the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement, or CEPA," Mr Leung said.

"Last year alone, seven of the top 10 box office hits in China were Hong Kong-Mainland co-production," he added.

Mr Leung concluded the day by attending a welcome dinner hosted by the Asia Society.

The Chief Executive will continue his visit to New York tomorrow (June 11, New York time) to officiate at "Think Asia, Think Hong Kong" symposium and "Hong Kong Dinner", the two trade promotional events organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. He will also attend lunch hosted by the National Committee on US-China Relations, and meet the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Mr William Dudley, as well as the Hong Kong people who work and study in New York.
