Company directors sentenced to imprisonment for wage offences
*****************************************************

Two directors of Hintac International Limited committed offences relating to wage payment under the Employment Ordinance. The two directors were sentenced to four  months' jail, suspended for 24 months, and each fined $18,000 today (June 10) at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts. The prosecution was initiated by the Labour Department. The two directors cleared the outstanding wages with interest for a sum of about $478,700 to four employees before sentencing.

The company failed to pay wages for nine months to four employees within seven days after the expiry of wage periods as required by the Employment Ordinance. The two directors were convicted for their consent, connivance or neglect in the offences.

"The judgment would send a strong message to all company directors and responsible persons that they have to ensure that wages are paid to employees in accordance with the Employment Ordinance," a spokesperson for the Labour Department said.

"The Labour Department will not tolerate the offences and will spare no effort in bringing to justice directors and employers who defy the law," the spokesperson added.
