2013 Edition of An Outline of Statistical Development published
******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published the 2013 Edition of An Outline of Statistical Development today (May 21).

In the light of the continuous social and economic developments, the call for quality statistics is becoming more pronounced. From macro-economic analysis, daily administration and long-term planning of the government, decision-making of industrial and business firms, to enhancing citizens' understanding of the society and their participation in discussions about social policies, official statistics play an important role in a wide range of endeavours.

To provide quality statistical services, the Government Statistical Service (GSS), which comprises the C&SD and statistical units in various government departments and bureaux, is dedicated to strengthening its statistical systems further. The publication depicts the work of the GSS and its major statistical activities, and provides an updated account of recent statistical developments in a number of social and economic areas of interest to the public.

The publication covers statistical programmes in a range of subject areas, namely population; labour; external trade; national income and balance of payments; prices; business performance; housing; banking, finance and insurance; strategic planning; transport; education; health; social welfare; law and order; leisure and cultural services; food and environmental hygiene; the environment; water supplies; and topical studies.

It is hoped that through a systematic introduction, the publication can help members of the public gain a better understanding of the use of official statistics and the work of the GSS.

Users can download the publication free of charge at the C&SD Website (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/report_on_statistical_development/index.jsp).
