Peking opera maestros to perform in Hong Kong

     As one of the attractions of the Chinese Opera Festival 2013 presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Tianjin Peking Opera Theatre is set to bring several Peking opera maestros to Hong Kong to perform renowned repertoire.

     Top artists invited from Tianjin include first class "wusheng" (military male role) actors Wang Ping and Zhang Youlin, along with Deng Muwei, a brilliant performer of the Qiu Shengrong stylistic school in "painted face" roles, for "Dingjun Mountain, Yangping Pass". Other members of the theatre company's strong cast include Wang Yan, who will perform in "Crossing the Ravine", and Huang Qifeng, who will perform in "Zhong Kui Marrying His Younger Sister Off". Another famous actor in "wusheng" roles, Wang Lijun, will perform "Interception on the River to Save the Young Prince", a piece he learned directly from Li Huiliang of "military actor" fame. He will also join Wang Ping and Shang Changrong, top "painted face" artists of "National Treasure" standing, and the first class "military comic role" actor Shi Xiaoliang in performing the military play "The Incident on Lianhuan Mountain" in full armour.

     During its early years, Tianjin Peking Opera Theatre brought together many renowned Peking opera virtuosi including Yang Baosen, Li Huiliang, Zhang Shilin, Zhou Xiaotian, Ding Zhiyun, Lin Yumei, Yang Ronghuan, Hang Zihe, Zhou Zihou, Yang Baozhong and others. Throughout the years since then, the theatre company has strived to create, adapt and perform at the same time and has produced more than 300 works including both traditional ones and those in the styles of different schools. Seven members have been awarded either the prestigious Chinese Theatre Plum Blossom Award or the Mei Lanfang Gold Award. The group has performed to wide acclaim on its tours in many different countries and areas.

Excerpts: "The Roc with the Golden Wings", "On Broken Bridge" from "The Legend of the White Snake", "Qin Qiong Inspecting the Army Formation" and "Interception on the River to Save the Young Prince"

June 29 (Saturday), 2.30pm
Excerpts: "Zhong Kui Marrying His Younger Sister Off", "Luo Cheng Calling at the City Gate", "The Incarceration of Shan Tong", and "Crossing the Ravine" from "The Lady Warriors of the Yang Family"

June 29 (Saturday), 7.30pm
"Dingjun Mountain, Yangping Pass"

June 30 (Sunday), 7.30pm
"The Incident on Lianhuan Mountain"

     Performances will be staged at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced from $100 to $400 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).      A free talk, "Artists on Their Art: Li Huiliang and Zhang Shilin - Paragons of Wusheng Roles in Peking Opera in Tianjin" (in Putonghua), will be held at 7.30pm on June 27 (Thursday) at AC2, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Speakers include Wang Ping and Zhang Youlin. Admission is free with seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
