Performance to draw on long-time friendship of local renowned musicians
*****************************************************

A trio of acclaimed musicians and good friends, flautist Peter Chan, guitarist Stephen Chau and composer Hui Cheung-wai, will jointly present a concert in June entitled "Vigorous Winds & Tough Strings - Duo Recital by Peter Chan (Flute) & Stephen Chau (Guitar)".

It has been over 20 years since Chan, Chau and Hui first met and became good friends. Since then they have collaborated in numerous venues, and today they are so successful that they can solely represent their own music fields. Their passion for music has not faded throughout the years, and their friendship has taken their performances to the highest levels.

In the first half of the concert, Chan and Chau will perform flute and guitar classics including Ibert's "Entr'acte", Paganini's "Caprice No. 24" and more. The second half will include two masterpieces by Hui: "June's Poems" and "Vigorous Winds & Tough Strings". The latter work was tailor-made for this concert by Hui and his old friends Martin Choy and Jensen Lung.

Flautist Peter Chan studied flute under the instruction of Timothy Wilson and continued his studies in Vienna. In 1990, he was invited to play Mozart's flute concerto in D with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta at its inaugural concert, and it was very successful. Afterwards, he was the principal flautist and concert soloist of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta for seven years. Chan has been active in teaching and performing throughout the years. Currently, Chan gives solo and chamber performances regularly with different musicians and groups.

Guitarist Stephen Chau began studying classical guitar when he was 14 and won the first prize at the Hong Kong Guitar Festival, Classical Section, in 1982. He furthered his studies under renowned guitarists and composers, among them Manuel Barrueco and Leo Brouwer. In addition to giving solo performances, Chau is also keen on chamber music, and recorded his "Duet" CD of guitar chamber music in 1996, and "Guitar New Age" in 2005. To date, he has premiered over 20 guitar works by Hong Kong composers.

Composer Hui Cheung-wai has been composing for some 30 years and more than 170 of his compositions have been performed to date. His music has been performed and broadcast in many cities around the world since 1980. Hui served as the Director of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild for more than 20 years, and has repeatedly received local and overseas commissions from brilliant instrumentalists, professional orchestras and choirs including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and more.
