Beach handball, dancing and Tin Hau celebration among highlights of "Hong Kong: Our Home" for May 6 to 12 (with photos)

     Beach handball, dancing and a Tin Hau festival are among the highlights of events supporting the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign from May 6 to 12.

     For the first time Hong Kong will host the Asian Men and Women's Beach Handball Championship, which starts on May 8 at the Kwai Chung Sports Ground.

     More than 200 competitors and officials from nine Asian countries and territories will take part in the competition, including a Hong Kong team.

     A carnival with game booths and performances will be held on the afternoons of May 11 and 12. For details and tickets, contact the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China (www.handball.org.hk).

     Locals and tourists alike will be amazed by the sights and sounds of the Tsing Yi Tin Hau Festival's Paper Floral Tributes Parade on May 12, from 8am to noon.

     Festivities taking place at the Tsing Yi Athletics Association Sportsground and on the main streets of Tsing Yi Island will include dragon dance, lion dance and Chinese opera. The festival will run from May 10 to 14.

     The Hong Kong DanceSport Association will bring all the excitement and colour of an international dance competition to town with the 2013 WDSF GrandSlam Hong Kong at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre on May 11 and 12.

     A total of 115 pairs of international competitors as well as 89 pairs of local competitors will contend for the honours. A small quantity of tickets are still available; please contact the Hong Kong DanceSport Association (www.hongkongdancesport.com).

     Twenty more events will also be staged during next weekend, including "Saturday Music-get-together with the Music Office" at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Foyer on May 11, "I Love you, Father & Mother" Colouring Competition and Carnival at the Plaza of Ap Lei Chau Estate on May 11, and Yuen Long Youth Festival 2013 Road Race in Tin Shui Wai on May 12.

     "Hong Kong: Our Home" is a city-wide public participation campaign that aims to inject positive energy into society, foster social cohesion and promote care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

     The Campaign provides a platform for enhanced publicity of events and activities that engage a wide cross-section of the community and showcase Hong Kong as a liveable and enjoyable city, thus instilling among residents a sense of pride about our home and a stronger sense of belonging.
