Films tell their stories in countless ways. To complement the forthcoming "Critics' Choice 2013 - Film Narrative in Perspective" series, which will screen six feature films that were pioneers in the history of cinematographic narrative, a number of veteran film critics will share with audiences the development and characteristics of film narrative in three free seminars to offer attendees a better understanding of film narrative.
The first seminar is "Film Narrative in Perspective", which will be held at 5pm on May 11 (Saturday) at the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA). Film critics Lau Yam, William Lau, Law Kar, Bryan Chang, Lam Kam-po and Ernest Chan will share with the audience the different perspectives in film narrative after the screening of director Michelangelo Antonioni's "L'Avventura" (1960). The second seminar, "Memoirs and Portraits", will be held at 4.30pm on June 12 at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum, where Lau Yam, Li Cheuk-to and Matthew Cheng will talk on the characteristics of memoirs and portraits after the screening of director Hou Hsiao-hsien's "Good Men, Good Women" (1995). The third seminar, "New Waves: New Ways of Storytelling", will be held at 4.15pm on July 1 at the Cinema of the HKFA with William Lau, Shu Ming and Yip Man-fung discussing the development and characteristics of the new ways of storytelling under the emergence of new waves, after the screening of Kuroki Kazuo's "Silence Has No Wings" (1966). All seminars will be conducted in Cantonese and admission is free.
"Critics' Choice 2013 - Film Narrative in Perspective" is presented by the Film Programmes Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and organised by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society. The films selected cover three different perspectives on film narrative and will be shown from May 11 to July 20 at the Cinema of the HKFA and the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum. The three topics are: "Mystery and Truth", featuring director Michelangelo Antonioni's "L'Avventura" and Roman Polanski's "Chinatown" (1974); "Memoirs and Portraits" featuring director Hou Hsiao-hsien's "Good Men, Good Women" and Julien Duvivier's "Dance Programme" (1937); and "New Waves: New Ways of Storytelling", showing Kuroki Kazuo's "Silence Has No Wings" and Jacques Rivette's "Celine and Julie Go Boating" (1974). All films have Chinese and English subtitles and they will be shown in 35mm.

In addition, a series of six workshops on film narrative with different themes will be held in the Function Room on the fourth floor of the Administration Building of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on Saturdays (June 8, 15 and 29 and July 6, 13 and 20). Except for the workshop on June 15, which will be held from 7pm to 9pm, all other workshops will be held from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Film critic Ka Ming will talk about the history of film development and introduce film appreciation in terms of film narrative. All the workshops will be conducted in Cantonese.
Tickets for all screenings and workshops, priced at $55 and $80 respectively, are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
