New appointment to Legal Aid Services Council

     The Government announced today (April 26) the appointment of a member to the Legal Aid Services Council.

     The Chief Executive has appointed Mr Joseph Li Chiu-wah, a solicitor, as a member of the council for the period from May 1, 2013, to August 31, 2014, in place of Mrs Cecilia Wong Ng Kit-wah, who has resigned.

     The Legal Aid Services Council is responsible for overseeing the administration of the legal aid services provided by the Legal Aid Department and advising the Government on legal aid policy.

     The council comprises a chairman and four members who are not connected with the practice of law, and two barrister members and two solicitor members recommended by the Hong Kong Bar Association and the Law Society of Hong Kong respectively. The council is currently chaired by Dr Eric Li Ka-cheung, and the other serving members are Ms Virginia Choi Wai-kam, Dr Witman Hung Wai-man, Ms Anna Kwong Sum-yee, Mr Edward Leung Wai-kuen, Ms Juliana Chow Hoi-ling, Ms Josephine Antonetta Pinto and Mr Billy Ma Wah-yan.

     The Director of Legal Aid is an ex-officio member of the council.
