The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer today (April 21) launched a new mobile application (app) "EventHK" to provide a one-stop platform for citizens to find public events which are organised by government departments or held at government venues. "EventHK" is available for free download on iOS and Android platforms.

Launching the app at the opening ceremony of the Mobility Experience Centre at Cyberport, the Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, said, "At present, the number of mobile phone users in Hong Kong exceeds 16 million, which means that every person owns more than two mobile devices on average. Among these users, more than 60 per cent are using smartphones."

"In this connection, the Government has been actively developing mobile e-government services to cater for the needs of the community. To date, about 90 government mobile websites and mobile apps have been launched, allowing citizens to access government information and services more conveniently. Today, we roll out another new mobile app, 'EventHK', which enables the public to easily obtain information on events organised by the Government or staged at government venues," he said.

With "EventHK", on-the-go users can get hold of information on various categories of events, including festivals and carnivals, entertainment performances, recreation and sports, library and museum programmes, communal activities, exhibitions and visits, etc.

Users can search various events by category, keyword and date. There is also a sharing function to allow users to share event information via email, short messaging service (SMS) and social media.

At initial launch, "EventHK" covers event information provided by the Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Housing Department, the Hong Kong Observatory and the Hong Kong Tourism Board. It will be gradually expanded to include more events organised by other departments and public organisations.

Today's launch was the finale event of International IT Fest 2013, which is a two-week programme featuring 25 signature IT events to showcase Hong Kong's IT achievements and strength and foster our image as a regional information and communications technology (ICT) hub. Over 40 000 people have participated in the events, covering a wide range of ICT domains where Hong Kong is developing fast, including cloud computing, digital entertainment, mobile technology and information security, etc.
