Chinese Opera Festival 2013 to demonstrate vitality of traditional performing arts

     The Chinese Opera Festival 2013 presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will be launched very soon. This year, the annual festival is offering a wide variety of choices among eight productions from the "civil" and "military" repertoire that highlight acting and martial arts in Chinese opera.
 
     A press conference for the festival was held today (April 11) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The LCSD's Senior Manager (Theatre and Chinese Opera), Ms Teresa Lee, introduced the festival's main programmes. In addition, renowned Cantonese opera artists Law Kar-ying, Yau Sing-po and Chan Ho-kau were present to introduce the new Cantonese opera "Battle at Wancheng"; Kunqu opera virtuosi Ji Zhenhua and Liang Guyin of the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe talked about the upcoming Kunqu opera programmes; Company Director of Tianjin Peking Opera Theatre Wang Ping and Peking opera virtuoso Wang Lijun discussed the Peking opera shows; and Company Director of the Shijiazhuang Sixian Opera Troupe of Hebei Wu Heli and Sixian opera artist Bian Shusen introduced their premiere to be presented in Hong Kong.

     The Chinese Opera Festival 2013, to be held from June 20 to July 28, will present eight Chinese opera programmes in different theatrical genres. These enriching programmes will include performances of Cantonese opera, Kunqu opera, Peking opera, Zhejiang Wu opera, Hebei Sixian opera, Hunan Xiang opera and Zhejiang Diaoqiang. In addition, to promote better understanding of Chinese opera, arts appreciation activities including symposiums, film screenings, talks and exhibitions will also be held.

     Tickets for the Chinese Opera Festival 2013 will be available tomorrow (April 12) at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
