Roving exhibition on glass bottle recycling moves to Telford Plaza (with photos)
************************************************************

A roving exhibition organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) with the aim of encouraging public participation in glass bottle recycling moved to the ground floor of Telford Plaza in Kowloon Bay today (April 11), where it will stay until April 14.

"The Government has launched a three-month public consultation on the mandatory producer responsibility scheme (PRS) on glass beverage bottles. We hope the public can learn more about the situation of glass bottle recycling in Hong Kong through this series of exhibitions and offer their views on the proposed PRS on glass beverage bottles before the consultation ends on May 6," an EPD spokesman said.

To add more interesting elements, the EPD has invited a local artist, Siuhak, to provide a number of visuals of "panda-a-panda" for inclusion in the panel displays and game booths, which illustrate the process of glass bottle recycling to raise public awareness.

Also on display are glass art pieces such as glass bottle drawings and unique glassware made out of waste glass bottles.

Moreover, a glass bottle recycling counter is set up in the exhibition for visitors to recycle glass beverage bottles, encouraging the public to develop green practices. Visitors who hand in emptied glass beverage bottles will receive a souvenir.

The remaining schedule of the roving exhibition is as follows:

                              Causeway Bay

Leaflets on the public consultation on the PRS on glass beverage bottles are obtainable at the exhibition venues while the consultation document is available at the EPD website. The public are welcome to offer their views and comments to the EPD by post (EPD Waste Management Policy Group, Room 4522, 45/F, Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong), email (glass_prs@epd.gov.hk) or facsimile (2318 1877) on or before May 6.

Some 150 tonnes of waste glass beverage bottles are generated in Hong Kong each day, placing significant pressure on Hong Kong's limited landfill capacity. In this regard, the Government has proposed to implement a mandatory PRS on glass beverage bottles so that the relevant stakeholders along the supply chain can jointly share the environmental responsibilities for proper management of glass beverage bottles. The scheme can also help turn waste into a resource for production of different construction materials. All this would help establish a circular economy for waste glass under which glass beverage bottles would no longer need to be dumped at landfills.
