Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, at a media session on the MTR Fare Adjustment Mechanism after a Legislative Council Panel on Financial Affairs and Panel on Housing joint meeting today (March 26):
Reporter: (On the Fare Adjustment Mechanism.)
Secretary for Transport and Housing: As I said earlier, as far as the Government is concerned, we would like to see a revised Fare Adjustment Mechanism that can address the three additional factors, namely service performance, the profitability of the corporation, as well as the affordability of the public.
Both the Government and the MTRC have the objective to work out a revised Fare Adjustment Mechanism that can fully address those three factors. At the moment the discussion between the two sides is still under way and we are working towards an agreement hopefully very soon in the future. Once the agreement is reached, then of course the revised Fare Adjustment Mechanism will apply. Any adjustment that might be warranted under the revised mechanism will take effect from June this year.
