EPD holds seminar for trades to discuss quality carbon auditing (with photo)
*******************************************************

About 150 professionals practising in the carbon audit trade, the testing and certification industry and other relevant trades attended a seminar on quality carbon audit practices at the Zero-Carbon Building, Kowloon Bay, today (March 15) to further enhance their understanding of the latest developments of carbon auditing and to exchange their experiences in the field.

The seminar was held by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC) and the Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS). The Chairman of the HKAS Task Force on Greenhouse Gas Validation and Verification, Professor Dennis Leung, and the Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Greenhouse Gas Management and Related Activities, Technical Committee on Environmental Management of the International Organization for Standardization, Dr Chan Kook-weng, were invited to attend the seminar as the guest speakers.

A spokesman for the EPD said, "The seminar was useful in enhancing the trade's understanding of the Government's policy and plans in promoting quality carbon auditing, as well as the new greenhouse gas (GHG) validation and verification accreditation service. Trade representatives attending the seminar also gained insight into the development and application of international standards on GHG accounting, and shared experiences in conducting carbon audits."

The EPD and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department jointly drew up a set of Guidelines to Account for and Report on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals for Buildings (Commercial, Residential or Institutional Purpose) in Hong Kong in 2008. The HKAS, with the EPD's support, has recently launched an accreditation service for organisations that provide greenhouse gas validation and/or verification services in accordance with ISO14064. This new accreditation service will further enhance GHG validation and verification services, and support professional development in carbon auditing.
