Roving exhibition encourages public to take part in glass bottle recycling (with photos)
**********************************************************

The series of roving exhibitions organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to raise the public's awareness of glass bottle recycling and encourage their participation has moved to Times Square in Causeway Bay and is being held there from today (March 14) till March 17. Visitors are welcome to hand in rinsed glass beverage bottles to the glass recycling counter set up at the venue and they will receive souvenirs for doing so.

Various panel displays illustrating the process of glass bottle recycling and a number of game booths are set up in the exhibition to raise public awareness of glass bottle recycling. Also on display are glass art pieces such as glass bottle drawings and unique glassware made out of waste glass bottles. The exhibition has received support from a local artist, Siuhak, who has provided a number of visuals of "panda-a-panda" for inclusion in the displays, making the event more attractive.

The glass recycling counter set up in the exhibition is handy for visitors to recycle glass beverage bottles and encourages the public to develop green practices and go green.

An EPD spokesman said, "The Government has launched a three-month public consultation on the mandatory producer responsibility scheme (PRS) on glass beverage bottles. The roving exhibition can enhance public understanding of the scheme."

Some 150 tonnes of glass beverage bottles are generated in Hong Kong each day, placing significant pressure on Hong Kong's limited landfill capacity. In this regard, the Government has proposed to implement a mandatory PRS on glass beverage bottles so that the relevant stakeholders along the supply chain can jointly share the environmental responsibilities for proper disposal of glass beverage bottles. The scheme can also help turn waste into a resource for production of different construction materials. All this would help establish a circular economy for waste glass under which glass beverage bottles would no longer need to be dumped at landfills.
