The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited Mr Peter Li to hold a lecture series on stage management (to be conducted in Cantonese). There will be a series of talks on different topics as well as a guided backstage tour. Li will provide participants with a basic understanding of stage management techniques and reflect on his career.
Li began his career in stage management in 1978 when he joined the Hong Kong Arts Centre as a stage lighting technician. From 1980's and 1990's, he was lighting designer in drama, dance and opera productions for various performing arts companies in Hong Kong. He won the Best Lighting Design award at the first Hong Kong Drama Awards presented by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies in 1992. He joined the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in 1989 and remained on its stage management team for 23 years until he retired in 2012. Over the years he has worked on musicals, classical operas and dramas for leading local companies as well as international companies performing in Hong Kong. He has also worked on many technically challenging productions requiring exceptionally high standards.
With many years of experience in stage management, Li has helped to make each show a success by meeting the highest technical and artistic standards, as well as by addressing the needs and expectations of the theatre professionals.

Topic: Stage Facilities
Content: This session focuses on stage facilities and covers the following topics: the structure of the counterweight system; the installation and operation of the fly system; the set-up of the orchestra pit for different performing formats such as musicals, operas, Chinese traditional theatre, drama productions and dance. Other installations such as the sound reflector and acoustic shell in the concert hall will also be introduced.

Topic: Venue for Experimental Theatre
Content: The studio theatre, with its retractable seats and flexible acting area, is ideal for experimental theatre and productions of various performing formats. The stage designer can realise his/her ideas by utilising the ˇ§bare wallsˇ¨ venue to optimal effect and by making use of lighting, acoustics and stage installations.

Topic: Venue Equipment and In-situ Set-up: Co-ordination and Operation
Content: In this session the venue equipment will be introduced, covering lighting, acoustics, audio-video systems, film projectors, radio broadcasting system and interpretation equipment, etc. There will also be discussions on the in-situ set-up of brought-in equipment and related operations, such as whether the large increase of lighting equipment and sound systems, live audio recording and video-taping, etc, are compatible with the installation design of the venue and operational viability.

Topic: Technical Management and Overall Co-ordination for the Production
Content: This session will focus on the scope of work of venue operation, the technical director, the deputy technical director, the stage manager and the various technical departments, covering pre-performance information for the operation manager of the performing group, operational technical meetings, move-in schedule, rehearsal schedule, progress updates, actual performance and measures to keep to a consistently high standard after the show opens.

Topic: On Site Tour
Content: The speaker will take participants on a guided tour of the Studio Theatre at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to introduce the venue facilities on the spot for a more in-depth understanding of theatre operation.
All lectures will start at 7.45pm. Tickets priced at $50 per session are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)
