"Sharing Lectures by Hong Kong Composers", presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and organised by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild, will be held in March and April.
There will be six lectures featuring renowned local composers, who will share their experiences and views on music composition.
Details of the lectures are as follows:
March 6 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Sixty Years of Music Writing - Doming Lam"
Speaker: Doming Lam
Guest speaker and demonstrator: Cecilia Lung
Content: Dubbed "the Father of New Music in Hong Kong", Doming Lam is a forerunner in the development of new music in Hong Kong. His compositions encompass a wide range of forms and styles, and are distinguished by his innovative vision. In the talk, Lam will discuss the relationship between the composer and music lovers, how to groom a good composer and what makes a conscientious composer.
March 13 (Wednesday)
Topic: "A Review of My Symphonic Works"
Speaker: Professor Chan Wing-wah
Content: Professor Chan Wing-wah's oeuvre covers about 30 large-scale works, including both Western and Chinese orchestral symphonies (which feature the mixed use of Chinese and Western instruments). His eight symphonies are regarded as phenomenal among contemporary Chinese composers. Professor Chan's music often reflects a topical interest, relevant to a specific social climate. In the talk, Professor Chan will look back at the path he has taken as a composer.
March 20 (Wednesday)
Topic: "John Chen - World Music Approach, as Reflected in His Compositions Through the Years"
Speaker: Dr John Chen
Content: Dr John Chen's musical diversity is reflected in his large number of compositions in many different genres and styles, from standard ensemble and orchestral works to those composed for jazz combos, modern theatre, dance and technology-based multimedia productions. On the other hand, Dr Chen's world-cultural-fusion approach has always been his main focus. During the discussion, Dr Chen will use examples of his compositions to share this unique focus within his diversity.
March 27 (Wednesday)
Topic: "From the Comprehension of Ancient Wisdom to the Creation of New Experience in Contemporary Aesthetics"
Speaker: Law Wing-fai
Demonstrator: Wong Chi-ching
Content: The cultural treasure trove of ancient China is an unfathomable source of inspiration for Law Wing-fai. As Law has explored the legacy in creating his music, he has discovered a dynamic life force, depth and breadth that would influence his style, artistic interest and creative approach, all of which are unique.
April 3 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Music Composition as a Creative Expression"
Speaker: Chen Ning-chi
Guest speaker: Hui Cheung-wai
Content: Chen Ning-chi is famous for his full-scale symphonies in which he delivers diverse themes through the timbre changes of Chinese and Western instruments. In the talk, Chen will trace the changes of the times vis-à-vis his own experience as a composer, discuss what it takes to be a composer, and take an analytical look at some of his most representative works.
April 10 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Thoughts on New Choral Potentials"
Speaker: Professor Richard Tsang
Content: The development of avant-garde music in the 20th century led to a dearth of tonality in choral music, so much so that the genre had been unable to continue the rich legacy of the 19th century. In the 21st century, the post-modern musical style has injected many new elements into choral art, allowing it to flourish and receive mass appeal. In the talk, different possibilities of post-modern choral music will be discussed, and the speaker will also share his unique experience as a composer in the genre.
All lectures (conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 7.30pm at the Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Space Museum.
