The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) will release the weekly grading of water quality at Lung Mei each month starting from today (February 4).
"The Government is laying a new sewerage system in the village areas of Lung Mei and Ting Kok with a view to improving the water quality at Lung Mei and Plover Cove," an EPD spokesman said.
"By releasing the water quality gradings of Lung Mei, the public will be able to help monitor the progress of water quality improvements," he said.
The EPD classifies beaches into four grades according to the level of E. coli in the water. Applying this grading system, Lung Mei's water quality was rated as Fair (Grade 2) for all the five sampling occasions this January. The water quality is on an improving trend as compared to Grade 3 most of the time since 2010.
The latest grading based on the most current data may be obtained from the department's websites on Beach Water Quality (www.beachwq.gov.hk and www.epd.gov.hk/epd/beach).
The EPD has been monitoring the water quality at Lung Mei since 2000. The monitoring programme regularly assesses the E. coli levels in seawater to determine the changes and trends of water quality in the area.
