Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety
****************************************************

Police yesterday (January 31) concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign. Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

A total of 296 verbal warnings and 1,269 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from January 25 to 31.

During the above period, Police issued 968 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 164 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge or pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge or pedestrian subway, 61 summonses for failing to comply with prescribed traffic signs and 48 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than at the crossing.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed over 11,000 publicity leaflets at 399 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely.  Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000", a Police spokesman said.
