Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the literary music theatre work "P.E. Period 2.0" by Theatre Ronin will be staged in March. The production is derived from a novel by renowned local author Dung Kai-cheung.
Theatre Ronin is continuing its creative direction of focusing on Hong Kong literature, and "P.E. Period 2.0" is a sequel to the troupe's adaptation of Dung's "P.E. Period", which was performed as a jazzy music theatre show drawn from literature that finds bleakness in splendour and beauty in callousness.
Speaking as both the author of "P.E. Period" and the dramaturge of the theatre production, Dung said, "I never imagined my book would be adapted into film ...... Staging it in the theatre seems more workable. The space and ways of presentation on a stage are much more flexible than those for the screen."
"P.E. Period 2.0" is about two young girls, Pui Pui and Not an Apple, meeting their challenges in life head-on, each in her own way, and in the process they show us the violent and gentle aspects of youth. They are at the age of 21, a threshold point in life. Pui Pui knows her days of listening to the chirping of the cicadas in the dorm are almost over, and that what is past is past. Not an Apple meanwhile knows that there always comes a time when songs of anger are sung out, and she sees her future lying ahead.
The production team includes director, playwright and production designer Tam Hung-man, music director and composer Stoa Lau, choreographer Ivanhoe Lam and lyricist Ivan Hui. The cast of the play includes Joe Wong, Li Wing-lui, Billy Sy, Benny Leung, Kwok Chui-yi and Owen Wong.
"P.E. Period 2.0" by Theatre Ronin (in Cantonese) will be staged at 8pm from March 15 to 17 (Friday to Sunday), and at 3pm on March 16 and 17 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Multi-Media Theatre, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity. Tickets priced at $160 and $120 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
