***************************************************

School leavers and job seekers are invited to explore education and career opportunities in Hong Kong's maritime industry by visiting the booth of the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council at the Education and Careers Expo 2013, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from tomorrow to Sunday (January 31 to February 3).

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council said, "The National 12th Five-Year Plan supports Hong Kong to reinforce and enhance its position as an international shipping centre, and the 2013 Policy Address has made clear the Government's intention to reinforce our maritime services cluster and develop high value-added maritime services. Newcomers to the maritime industry will enjoy very good prospects."

The booth will provide information on maritime training and details about the job nature and entry requirements for technical and professional careers in various maritime service sectors in Hong Kong, including ship management, ship finance, ship brokering, marine insurance, maritime law and maritime arbitration, as well as professional posts in the Marine Department.

"Maritime training leads not only to rewarding careers on ships but also opens doors to various land-based professional careers in the maritime industry and related fields," the spokesman said.

The booth also provides information on various maritime-related education programmes offered by local tertiary institutes, as well as government-funded training incentives and scholarship schemes such as the Sea-going Training Incentive Scheme, Ship Repair Training Incentive Scheme, Hong Kong Maritime and Logistics Scholarship Scheme and Hong Kong Maritime Law Scholarship Scheme.

Visitors who wish to find out more can attend the "Gateway to Maritime Career" talk, to be held from 4pm to 4.30pm on February 1 (Friday) at Hall 1C, HKCEC. The speakers will be Lecturer of the Department of Engineering of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi), Mr Lai Tung-kam; Assistant Professor of the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr Yip Tsz-leung; Senior Lecturer of the Department of Engineering of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi), Mr Yeung Wing-cheung; and the Convenor of the Maritime Professional Promotion Federation, Mr  Marso Law.
