FarmFest 2013 opens at Fa Hui Park in Mong Kok (with photos)
************************************************************

FarmFest 2013, the largest outdoor farmers' market in Hong Kong, opened today (January 18) at Fa Hui Park in Mong Kok. Over 300 stalls are showcasing a wide variety of local agricultural and fishery products at the three-day carnival. Local organic tomato, organic potato, hydroponic baby leaf vegetables and jade perch are this year's theme produce.

The event has been jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Vegetable Marketing Organization, Fish Marketing Organization and Organising Committee of FarmFest 2013. First held in 2007, FarmFest has established itself as a major agricultural market, where farmers bring their produce to sell directly to consumers. Last year the event attracted over 280,000 visitors over four days.

More than 180 booths will sell premium local produce including fresh organic fruit and vegetables, chilled fish, dried seafood and ornamental plants. Local delicacies, kitchenware, household goods and eco-friendly products will also be available.

Local organic tomato, organic potato, hydroponic baby leaf vegetables and jade perch have been chosen as this year's theme produce. A special kiosk will display different varieties of tomatoes and potatoes and an outdoor field of fresh organic vegetables and herbs will give visitors a taste of nature in the heart of the city.  Visitors will also be able to learn more about aquaculture practices at a simulated fish pond.

With the organic crop field and fish pond as a backdrop, a simulated old Hong Kong pier lined with traditional shops selling local delicacies will create a nostalgic ambience. There will also be demonstrations of Controlled Environment Hydroponic (CEH) technology and interactive computer games on fish farming.

CEH technology can make use of vacant industrial buildings for year-round crop production without climatic constraints. It does not use any pesticides and is virtually free from environmental contamination. With proper control of temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, nutrient supply and lighting, CEH technology can guarantee secure and safe vegetable production and may become the future trend in urban agriculture.

Along with various fringe activities such as cultural performances, talks and cooking demonstrations, FarmFest 2013 is for the enjoyment of people of all ages.

Admission is free. There will be a free shuttle bus service every 15 minutes from Shek Kip Mei MTR Station exit B1.
