Launching Ceremony for QEH Golden Jubilee Celebration (with photo)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Opened on September 10, 1963, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) has entered its 50 years of service in 2013. To commemorate this special occasion, the Launching Ceremony for QEH Golden Jubilee Celebration was held today (January 13) to mark the 50th anniversary of QEH.

     Officiating at the Launching Ceremony, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam remarked, "As the public healthcare service provider, the Hospital Authority undertakes the mission of 'Helping People Stay Healthy' and provides affordable, professional and high-quality public healthcare services to the public. We all take pride in the medical and nursing teams, which have always been the backbone of our public healthcare system. Over last 50 years, the staff of Queen Elizabeth Hospital have worked with us hand in hand. Despite the extra workload and pressure incurred by ageing population and increasing expectation from the public, our healthcare professionals always perform their duties most professionally and selflessly." Mrs Lam particularly took this opportunity to thank every QEH colleague for their endeavours over all these years.

     QEH is the leading hospital in Kowloon Central Cluster and has long served the population of 0.5 million covering the districts of Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon City. As one of the major acute general hospitals in Hong Kong, QEH provides comprehensive medical services round the clock, and supports the public with a wide range of ambulatory, acute and extended care services. Our QEH colleagues are always dedicated to care our patients in physical, mental and spiritual fields.

     The Chairman of the Hospital Authority, Mr Anthony Wu, highlighted in his speech that "Queen Elizabeth Hospital enjoys an excellent reputation as a provider of comprehensive healthcare services and advanced medical facilities and technologies. The hospital has adhered to its core values, viz, 'patient-oriented', 'resources conscious', 'sharing and caring' and 'continuous improvement'. As a major acute general hospital, QEH is entrusted to handle emergencies and critical cases. Over the years, the hospital has encountered various challenges. Still, the healthcare team continues to serve patients with compassion and professionalism amid numerous challenges."

     Other officiating guests of the Launching Ceremony included the Chairman of the Panel on Health Services of Legislative Council, Dr Leung Ka-lau; the Deputy Chairman of the Panel on Health Services of Legislative Council, Dr Joseph Lee; the Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority, Dr Leung Pak-yin; the Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, Mr Chung Kong-mo; the Co-Chairman of Organising Committee for QEH 50th Anniversary, Mr David Mui; the Chairman of the QEH Alumni Association, Dr York Chow; and the Cluster Chief Executive of Kowloon Central Cluster/ the Hospital Chief Executive of QEH, Dr Hung Chi-tim. Together with more than 700 QEH colleagues present today, they recalled the old days of QEH and foresaw its future, sharing the commemorative moment of 50th anniversary.

     Last but not least, on behalf of QEH, the Chairman of the Hospital Governing Committee of QEH, Mr John Lee, expressed much gratitude in the support from the Hong Kong Government and the Hospital Authority, especially the dedicated care provided by all QEH colleagues. "We will continue to serve our patients whole-heartedly, work closely with community partners and will move the local medical services into a new era."
