Vehicle Maintenance Workshops Charter to help enhance trade service standards (with photos)
************************************************************

The Vehicle Maintenance Technical Advisory Committee (VMTAC) and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) launched today (January 10) the Vehicle Maintenance Workshops Charter to enhance the service quality of the trade in Hong Kong.

Officiating at the Launching Ceremony today at the EMSD Headquarters, the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing (Transport), Mr Joseph Lai, said, "The Government has been focusing on the development of vehicle maintenance in an incremental and stepwise manner, actively promoting the continuous improvement of service standards in the vehicle maintenance trade."

The Vehicle Maintenance Workshops Charter is a voluntary scheme. By subscribing to the Charter, vehicle maintenance workshops pledge to abide by the Practice Guidelines for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops that stipulate service requirements in technical, environmental, safety, training, service and documentation aspects, and undertake to operate their workshops at a level of quality not lower than that specified in the Guidelines. Signatory workshops must also have a permanently covered work area, employ Registered Vehicle Mechanics and hold a valid business registration certificate.

The Charter logo is a symbol of service quality, and the scheme will help raise the vehicle maintenance trade's service standards and enhance its professional image and competitiveness. The Charter scheme will also help enhance vehicle safety and improve roadside air quality. The Charter has attracted over 100 workshops to sign up so far. Signatory workshops can display the Charter logo in their workshops for easy identification by car owners and to enhance customers' confidence in services. Details of signatory workshops have been uploaded to the EMSD website (www.emsd.gov.hk) for the public's reference.

Mr Lai pointed out that the VMTAC and the trade have done a lot to promote the development of the vehicle maintenance trade in past years to help reach today's success.
