Guangdong Music Series to present traditional music in Kowloon Walled City Park
*******************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), which is continuing to deliver more programmes in the Guangdong Music Series, will present "Guangdong Music Under the Tree" in the afternoons of December 1 and 2 (Saturday and Sunday) in the Kowloon Walled City Park. Veteran musicians have been invited to perform and promote the two local music genres of Guangdong and Chaozhou music. Admission is free, and audiences are welcome to bring their families along to enjoy the traditional music in a park environment.

Each of the performances will feature a different programme. The fascinating programme in the first performance includes the Chaozhou pieces "Appointing Generals to Get Ready for Battle", "All Red is the River", "Phoenix in the Sky", "Lions Playing with a Ball", "Fish Hawks Dabbling in the Water", "As the Waves Wash the Sand", "Going Up the Mansion" and "Selling Groceries". On the next day, audiences can enjoy a series of Guangdong music pieces including "Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake", "A Hungry Horse Shaking Its Bells", "Rain Lashing on the Plantain", "Autumn Moon in the Han Palace", "The Toll of the Temple Bell", "Playing the Lute by the Plantain and the Rockery", "Yang Cuixi", "In Celebration of Good Times" and "Thunder in the Drought".

Chaozhou music (also referred to as Chiuchow music) and Guangdong music were inscribed onto the first national list of intangible cultural heritage of China. Chaozhou music has a long history; with its roots in the folk and vernacular tradition, Chaozhou music has a wide audience base because it is passed from generation to generation. It is an indispensable form of entertainment in the festivities of the Chaozhou and Shantou communities. Wherever there are Chaozhou people, Chaozhou music can be found. It acts as a bond between people of that origin, and at the same time it transcends language barriers and becomes a way for the Chaozhou people to communicate with the world.

Guangdong music, or Cantonese music, is an indigenous and traditional music form in Hong Kong. It is a synthesis of Guangdong folk tunes and Cantonese opera music and songs. After years of development, Guangdong music formed its own style and musical system as an excellent representation of Guangdong folk culture.

"Guangdong Music Under the Tree" will be staged at 2.30pm on December 1 and 2 at the Former Yamen Building of Kowloon Walled City, Kowloon Walled City Park.
